 Tackle the impossible!

Fred knew it was possible when the others said it could not be done.

His church needed help. The sanctuary had an unsightly crack in the chancel wall, woodwork needed revarnishing, and the walls practically weeped for paint. It would be costly to do if professionals were employed, and the congregation didn't have any money.

So Fred volunteered. Paint was donated. About five others assisted with light work. Borrowed scaffolding was erected so Fred could reach wood on the ceiling and high portions of walls. Fred said the work would begin on Monday and be finished by Sunday. Several members of the congregation stood in disbelief or snickered with a touch of ridicule. But Fred and the others were determined.

It was a big task simply to unbolt each pew from its setting and move it out of the way as scaffolding relocated from one point to another. Even Frank, an elderly member and the last living founder of the congregation, did his part by sitting on the floor and scraping up old wax when each pew was moved.

The work was completed in five days and there was still a day of rest before Sunday. Even the pastor was surprised.

Never underestimate the power of a volunteer with a vision.

The congregation stood in awe that Sunday morning, even those who had stood in ridicule and voiced disbelief a week previous. Everyone was pleased with the accomplishment and beamed with pride. The next time Fred and the others had an idea, more volunteers stepped forward, and the congregation became more active.

What needs sprucing up in the lives of others around you? Is there an unsightly crack to fill, the result of problems and failed relationships? Need to remove the residue of past sin that sticks to a soul like wax buildup on the floor? Need to brighten someone's attitude and outlook like new paint on the wall?

Look around you. Do neighbors need physical help getting to the store or maintaining their property? Maybe your church and local school need volunteers to work on the premises. Perhaps a church-related agency or social service institution needs your assistance more than your monetary donation. How will you respond?

Volunteerism is alive in the hearts and lives of thousands of people just like you. Foster it. Share a vision, an idea. Put your shoulder to the task and get to work, whether your involvement is big or small.

The Lord blessed Fred's efforts. With the Holy Spirit moving you to action and guiding your way, the Lord will bless your efforts, too.
